AMERICAN RED CROSS SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON CHAPTER

Member since 2008

The Southwest Washington Chapter of the American Red Cross has
served residents of Clark County and Southwest Washington for over
90 years.
The mission of the Red Cross is help people prevent, prepare for and
respond to emergencies.

*  Last year, each of the over 27,000 units of donated blood had the potential to save three lives!
*  On an average of once every three days, our volunteer Disaster Assistance Teams respond to apartment and house fires, providing
emergency lodging, food and clothing to victims who have lost everything.

All emergency response assistance provided by the Red Cross is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies solely on
the generosity of the American public to fulfill its mission.  Donations made to Southwest Washington American Cross stay in this
community for the benefit of local citizens. Out of every dollar donated $.93 goes directly into services provided.

You can help your local Red Cross by donating blood, becoming a volunteer, taking a class to get prepared, or making a financial
donation . Call the Vancouver office 360-693-5821 located at 3114 E. Fourth Plain Blvd. or visit our

The mission of the Clark County Food Bank is to alleviate hunger and its root causes by distributing food to low-income and food-insecure residents of Clark County through our agency partners as well as provide nutrition education and advocacy.  We serve organizations, not individuals—yet we are able to see faces in our work knowing that sustenance is being provided to thousands of Clark County residents.  Clark County Food Bank has been providing services in Clark County since 1985 from its Stop Hunger Warehouse, which is staffed by two employees along with many volunteers and managed through a contract with The Salvation Army.

In 2007 we received, stored, and distributed over 3 million pounds of fresh, frozen, chilled and shelf-stable food products to over 30 nonprofit agencies and organizations.  Fourteen ‘local food banks’ make up our Food Distribution Committee, which recommends distribution policies and procedures to our seven-member board of directors.

Clark County Safe Kids focuses on preventing unintentional injuries especially to children. We conduct car seat clinics and bicycle helmet fittings. Through coalition members we get injury prevention education to all members of the community.

Our primary goal is to educate parents and caregivers about unintentional injuries and how to avoid them.  Motor vehicle crashes are still the number one killer of children under the ages of 14. Every child needs to be properly restrained in a vehicle all the time.

Properly fitted helmets can and do reduce traumatic brain injury to all ages as long as they are worn correctly.  Please contact us for information on how you can support

Unlocking the Doors of Opportunity
Deaf Education Advocates Foundation (D.E.A.F.) was established in 1989. Its purpose is to generate funds through private philanthropy, to be used for enrichment programs for the students of Washington School for the Deaf.  D.E.A.F.‘s mission: To enhance the education of all deaf and hard of hearing children and youth in Washington State.
D.E.A.F. is embarking on a campaign to build its capacity and raise awareness of the Foundation’s activities and the need for more financial support. The current focus is on the Washington School for the Deaf’s Post High School program, which prepares students for independent living and the work world. Unemployment and under-employment figures hover near 75% for deaf and hard of hearing individuals once they leave the school system. Most current students and graduates of the Washington School for the Deaf face significant communication barriers when interacting with persons outside of the deaf community. Many find communication within their own family difficult. A significant percentage contend with socioeconomic disadvantages and/or multiple disabilities. The WSD Post High School Program helps to provide these young persons with the training and opportunities that they need for future success.

We strive for:
•long-term abstinence from chemical abuse,
•solid family relationships,
•a client’s awareness of personal responsibility for their own actions.

Who does Daybreak Help?
Daybreak operates an inpatient drug and alcohol treatment program for boys 12 - 18 years of age, who typically stay for six to eight weeks and then go to outpatient-based services in the community. Teens who come to Daybreak generally need a secure, structured setting where they can gain sobriety, stability, and skills for their recovery. Addiction is a disease which touches many, many families regardless of race, class or religion.

Is Daybreak effective?
Young people in Daybreak’s inpatient treatment program are unusually successful. Nearly 80% of Daybreak clients in Vancouver, Wa. complete the treatment program, including many who have failed in other treatment programs due to unmanageable behaviors, disciplinary issues, or running away.

Contributions help pay for treatment scholarships so that no teen is turned away because their families are unable to pay the full cost of care. If you are looking to make a difference in the lives of others, we offer the
following story of challenge turned to a reality.

Tim, a recent student, was born blind. Accepting his blindness as a challenge but not a limitation, Tim
graduated from community college, but still could not find employment. He
was faced with the same situation confronting over 60% of the blind and
visually impaired members of our community - he was an educated, capable and
talented person unable to find work. Tim then completed our rigorous
two-year training program. After graduating he secured a position as a piano
technician with Buddy Gray Music in Tuscaloosa, AL. He has a profession and
is now living on his own - independently self-sufficient.

Since we are self-funded, this life-changing story is made possible by strong donor
support. Check the web site

Step It Up, Inc. connects high school students with individualized, career-relevant on-the job-training, career advising, and living-wage employment opportunities that assist them in becoming self-sufficient, confident, and productive adults.

Mission: Our mission is to inspire the belief that all students deserve the chance to prove their abilities and follow their career dreams. We accomplish our mission by supporting high school students, especially low-income and minority students, to achieve their education and career goals through participation in three youth workforce development programs. These programs follow research-based practices and include the Pre-internship Program, the Internship Program, and the Career Achievement Program

Each of these programs was developed to specifically address the challenges students face today in achieving their education and career goals. These challenges are frequently overwhelming and goals can appear to be unattainable, especially for low-income and minority students who lack access to career networks, encouraging advisors, and living-wage employment opportunities. Nationally, 88% of high school students who drop out have passing grades but are bored with school, see no reason to get a diploma, and need money (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation report 2006).  Visit their website for more information.

The Val Ogden Center is first and foremost a community of people—a community intentionally organized to support individuals living with the effects of mental illness.  The Val Ogden Center is organized and operates as a “Clubhouse Program.”  Clubhouses are recognized internationally as restorative environments for people who have had their lives drastically disrupted by mental illness and who feel the need for support from others who believe that recovery from mental illness is possible for all.

Through participation in the Val Ogden Center, people are given the opportunity to develop friendships, strengthen family ties, structure their day in a meaningful and productive way, obtain employment and pursue educational goals. The Val Ogden Center environment is developed in such a way as to ensure that there is ample opportunity for human interaction and there is more than enough work to be accomplished.  The daily activity of a Clubhouse is organized around a structured system known as the “work ordered-day.”  Members and staff work side-by-side, as colleagues, to accomplish the work that is needed to operate the Clubhouse.  Through this shared work, members structure their day and gain a range of social and vocational skills and abilities.

The goal of the Val Ogden Center is to help its membership reintegrate into the community as fully functioning citizens.  The Clubhouse offers three different types of employment programs, each offering different levels of professional support to assist members with accessing employment and then learning and maintaining their positions.  The Clubhouse also assists members in returning to college to pursue educational goals.  The Clubhouse program is always available to members who are working or going to school for ongoing support and assistance when needed.  Membership is a lifetime opportunity and members choose when and how they use the Clubhouse over time.
