Member since 2008

The Southwest Washington Chapter of the American Red Cross has
served residents of Clark County and Southwest Washington for over
90 years.
The mission of the Red Cross is help people prevent, prepare for and
respond to emergencies.

*  Last year, each of the over 27,000 units of donated blood had the potential to save three lives!
*  On an average of once every three days, our volunteer Disaster Assistance Teams respond to apartment and house fires, providing
emergency lodging, food and clothing to victims who have lost everything.

All emergency response assistance provided by the Red Cross is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies solely on
the generosity of the American public to fulfill its mission.  Donations made to Southwest Washington American Cross stay in this
community for the benefit of local citizens. Out of every dollar donated $.93 goes directly into services provided.

You can help your local Red Cross by donating blood, becoming a volunteer, taking a class to get prepared, or making a financial
donation . Call the Vancouver office 360-693-5821 located at 3114 E. Fourth Plain Blvd. or visit our

is an all-volunteer organization with the motto, “Helping today for a better tomorrow.”  The almost-fifty members serve the community through four programs that benefit women and children.

The Assault Survivor Kits ® program provides the emergency rooms of three hospitals—Legacy Salmon Creek, Southwest Washington Medical Center and St. John’s, Longview—with clothing and toiletries for women and children who are victims of assault as many such victims arrive in their nightclothes or with torn and damaged clothing, or their clothing is kept by law enforcement officers as evidence.  A member serves as liaison with each hospital ensures that each has a stock of kits for distribution.

My Life Story Books are given to children in foster care.  These beautiful handmade memory albums give children a place to keep family history and letters, photos and records as they move from place to place.  The group makes and donates thirty books per month to Children’s Protective Services to distribute.

Operation School Bell® provides new clothing—including coats and shoes—and school supplies to children in poverty at several elementary schools throughout Clark County.  School employees identify specific needs to an Assistance League liaison who supplies the requested items.  The program has recently been expanded to include children between the ages of 10 and 18 who are suddenly removed from their homes by Children’s Protective Services and often have only what they are wearing at the time.

The Community Outreach Program partners with Innovative Services Northwest to provide volunteers in the children’s orthotics clinics and the community preschool, literacy supplies for children and scholarships for preschool attendees in the summer, when government assistance is not available.

Funding for all the programs comes from two annual fundraisers—the Sleigh Bell Benefit lunch held in early December and a Spring Garden Party.  All funds raised remain in the community and are dispersed through the programs.

Chess for Success is one of our community’s leaders in helping kids who go to low-income schools unlock their potential. In chess club students are developing the skills and confidence that can help to overcome the sometimes devastating challenges that stem from living in poverty. The students we serve discover they can do anything they set their minds to. The skills that we are helping students develop through chess: critical-thinking, good decision-making, patience and creative problem-solving are the most sought-after skills by employers. And, they are the kinds of skills that students need to excel academically; especially when 40% of students who enter high school in the Portland area will not graduate on time. We know our program is working: Our students score higher in math and reading and test above the 90% percentile in state standardized tests. These are students who “are not supposed to be successful” but they are, each and every day. To learn more visit http://www.chessforsuccess.org

We have a car seat clinic at SWMC every 3rd Saturday. We can check your car seat to ensure that it is in correctly. Additional informaiton or questions call 360-450-8997.

Dream Big Community Center (DBCC) is a new nonprofit community center in Vancouver, WA.  In July of 2007, DBCC became an official tax-exempt 501(c)(3). DBCC was created in response to the lack of development of adolescent-focused programs by social service organizations and nonprofits. In particular, DBCC is to serve the needs of teenagers in Vancouver, WA.  The programs are Dream Big 101, the Dream Big Essay Contest, and Banking on Our Future.

In 2010, Dream Big 101 will have over 600 students in four different schools.  Our ultimate goal for DBCC will be uniquely different from current recreational and community centers. The difference would be our wraparound approach of including educational, social, and recreational services focusing on empowering youth in one centralized location. The DBCC will be a safe place for anyone to pursue their dreams without ridicule and/or repercussions. All community members would be invited to become members to enjoy all services, amenities, and resources Dream Big has to offer. DBCC will be the place to have a good time, learn, grow, dream, be empowered, to get engaged, give back, and to see dreams come to fruition.

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) is an open admission shelter accepting all animals. They work to find loving homes for more than 10,000 animals each year. HSSW’s programs emphasize topics such as spay and neuter awareness, pet identification, responsible pet ownership and animal safety.

Find clothing, furniture and household items at two Paws-N-Claws thrift stores, or shop for pet supplies at the shelter retail shop. Donations to Paws-N-Claws, and purchases at both Paws-N-Claws and the shelter retail store directly benefit the animals.

Volunteers generously give of their time and talents through work in the shelter and through programs like foster care and special events.
Volunteer opportunities are endless!

Every contribution to HSSW helps animals - whether it is a cash, the purchase of a tribute gift, or the donation of pet food. Ask about monthly giving through the Tender Sender program, or auto donation through Cars for Critters.

There are many easy ways to support the animals at HSSW!

Community …
The JDN is a network community that believes in the power of networking to enrich our lives and the world around us. We believe that in order to be a strong networking community, we must be constantly changing, increasingly active and diverse.

Relationships …
The JDN is about building relationships. We are a service that keeps our networking community connected. We believe that the health of our community can be measured by the relationships formed between the nonprofits we serve. Our aim is to build services that overcome barriers that keep job seekers and employment opportunities from finding each other. Working together and developing strong relationships - we overcome those barriers.

Partnerships …
The JDN is about cooperation and sharing. We are a network that is only as strong as the partnerships that support it. None of us can build a community alone. We take partnerships very seriously and seek to work with each other, nonprofit organizations, businesses and governmental leaders committed to building stronger partnerships removing barriers to employment.  Website.

NatureScaping of SW Washington’s mission is to teach homeowners to take a proactive role in restoring Clark County’s natural habitat by creating private backyard wildlife sanctuaries. By intentionally and thoughtfully planting native and other beneficial plants in our yards, we all can help restore habitat displaced by development. Good environmental stewardship begins in our own backyards! The Wildlife Botanical Gardens, 11000 NE 149th St., Brush Prairie, Washington, are developed and maintained by NatureScaping of SW Washington volunteers, and comprise nine distinct, themed gardens, and a compost educational site, demonstrating garden concepts to attract birds, bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife. These Gardens include more than 700 species and varieties of labeled plants. Special emphasis is placed on native plants of the Pacific Northwest. We need volunteers for all facets of garden maintenance and non-profit development. View our website at: http://www.naturescaping.org and come walk through the Gardens. NORTHWEST ASSOCIATION FOR BLIND ATHLETES

(NWABA) is a 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization. It was formed on May 5, 2007 by a group of visually impaired athletes because there was a lack of sports opportunities in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.

The mission of NWABA is to provide opportunities for blind and visually impaired persons to become engaged in physical activity and sports. We will provide scholarships and host events to build confidence and physical fitness. The confidence gained from sports will inspire athletes to follow their dreams in life and in sports.

NWABA provides opportunities to athletes in Powerlifting, Goalball, Judo, Swimming, Track and Field, Tandem Cycling, Skiing, and Wrestling. Our dream is to make a difference in the lives of every visually impaired individual in the Northwest and give them the opportunity to participate in sports and physical activity. Sports have a life-changing impact on an athlete’s life. When athletes realize that they can excel in sports, it builds the confidence to excel in school or work.

There are hundreds of potential athletes across the Northwest who aren’t involved in sports because of their vision; most of them aren’t able to participate in baseball, football, basketball or even their physical education class. Instead, they sit at home or on the bench and never have the opportunity to participate or be on a “team.” Our goal is to reach as many blind persons as possible and enrich their life through athletics.

NSSAFETEAM is a group of nurses involved in doing sexual assault exams, collecting forensic evidence from victims of rape. We do this in a hospital setting.
We formed the nonprofit to better serve our community and include the victims of domestic violence.  We look to be active in educating our community about the process of forensic evidence collection. We want to provide safe and competent forensic evidence collection in assault cases in accordance with the IAFN Guidelines.

Rape and domestic violence are under-reported crimes due to the perceived stigma attached to those crimes and a lack of understanding of the services that are available to the victims. Better forensic evidence should lead to a higher conviction rate of the perpetrators.  Contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for more information.

If you are looking to make a difference in the lives of others, we offer the
following story of challenge turned to a reality.

Tim, a recent student, was born blind. Accepting his blindness as a challenge but not a limitation, Tim
graduated from community college, but still could not find employment. He
was faced with the same situation confronting over 60% of the blind and
visually impaired members of our community - he was an educated, capable and
talented person unable to find work. Tim then completed our rigorous
two-year training program. After graduating he secured a position as a piano
technician with Buddy Gray Music in Tuscaloosa, AL. He has a profession and
is now living on his own - independently self-sufficient.

Since we are self-funded, this life-changing story is made possible by strong donor
support. Check the web site

SHARED HOPE

Shared Hope is guiding an initiative to influence states to adopt laws that protect sex trafficking victims and bring justice to those who exploit them.
• Behind stronger laws are the officers who enforce them. We present trainings on how to identify and rescue trafficked minors instead of arresting them.
• Our social services trainings provide understanding of the trauma-bond between a victim and her pimp. We are convening shelter directors to develop a guide for therapeutic care using modifications specifically for survivors.
• The “Do You Know Lacy?” Program increases activism through awareness of the prevalence and signs of trafficking. To broaden exposure, “Do You Know Lacy?” billboards are being sponsored in major U.S. cities.
• Defenders are men who pledge to not participate in any act that creates the demand for commercial sex.
• Ambassadors of Hope are advocates trained to represent Shared Hope at events and give public presentations.
• The Women’s Investment Network provides qualifying women with skills and vocational training.

United Way has been providing services for the four-county Portland/Vancouver metro area for almost a century.  Our mission: Helping people, changing lives, making every contribution count. We know that no one person or organization can solve our community’s tough issues alone.  That’s why we bring people, resources, and ideas together to find solutions and create long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place.  We do this by focusing on the basics we all need: education, income, and health.  We all win when kids succeed in school, families are financial stable and people have good health.

We use a volunteer-driven grant funding process to identify partners who are committed to collaboration and we invest in programs that achieve measurable results. United Way is currently funding 37 programs and working with over 100 partner agencies as well as funding key initatives including: Project Access Now (PANOW), Hands-on-Greater-Portland, 211info, Born Learning, Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Program, and the Community Relief Fund (CRF).  Over the past three years, United Way has invested $2.4 million in grant and initiative funding to help Clark County residents.  We currently fund programs in Clark County through: ARC of Clark County, Coalition of Community Health Clinics, Community Housing Resource Center, Irvington Covenant Community Development Corporation, Second Step Housing, the Native American rehabilitation Association, Native American Youth and Family Center, as well as through United Way initiatives. Thanks to Cornerstone Partners who cover our overhead expenses,  100% of your donation will be invested locally. Join us in being part of the solution. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a brighter future.  That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.  Give, Advocate, Volunteer.  http://www.unitedway-pdx.org
