LEXICON
“Nonprofit” is a corporate entity type, created (incorporated) within a state.  As a state corporation they are regulated by state laws which vary by state.  “Tax-exempt, 501-(C)-(3)” is a tax status recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. Only the IRS can determine there are no taxes due from a corporation.  Instead of taxes, a tax-exempt organization provides a direct public benefit.  These benefits are all outlined in the tax code.
